Why my bird guide says Yellow Vented Flowerpecker got whitish iris when what I have seen have crimson/scarlet-black iris?

Field guides are not always accurate...... which field guide are you using, some differences are caused by the differences of subspecies in different regions.

I use both Quentin and Susan Myer. Quentin got very little description. The description is from Susan Myer which seems to get a lot of info from Craig Robson.

I had both too, for Susan Myers, unfortunately many of the drawings are directly taken from Robson's, this results in a number of wrong features being depicted, some of them are not correct for the subspecies on Borneo, I too combinely use both to get the best results but hasnt got the chance to bird in Borneo yet, the best thing I did is short garden birdwatching in Brunei once during our stranded flight. I suppose it's about time you start a club within this group to go round the country birding. When the club comes to any place, club members there will play host. This will keep cost low and level of fun higher. Then we get to meet more members and our sharing experience will be more meaningful. Sometimes, Air Asia charge dirt cheap flying around.

actually cost is not the actual concern here....... the concern is TIME....... although my work is flexible time, but that also means the time are not fixed and you often need to work outside working hours as well, a lot of restriction and a lot of time that we are not allowed to take leaves, many of my colleagues ended up burning some of their leaves every year, I am just taking one week off next week for a short break and I still have 5 more days of carried forward leave to be used up by the end of the year!! I only get to travel around to birdwatch nowadays almost only when I have the opportunity to travel for a business trip or else I am stuck in birdwatching at my backyard for 1-2 hour when I managed to squeeze some time out........ Sad Maybe I must wait until my sabbatical at least........

Was once in the same shoes but not anymore. I understand the good and bad. Well, Malaysia are always blessed with long Public holidays and you can always take a day or two away for a break ha.... For me it's easy, but for family, we depend on such holidays to sneak off for a break too ...

Always sneak out the back door before sun came up for a quickie on weekends.... My private patch is only 200m away ha..... Wife join me if she's free, so no complain. no birds also NVM, just the feel and sound will suffice.
